A Gaelic speaking Celtic scholar and archaeologist, Ross's 1974 book Pagan Celtic Britain was both a central book in the field of Romano-British studies and a tome for hippies and freethinkers in the 1960s.

She also had a firm belief in psychic phenomena and was a key figure linked to the allegedly paranormal Hexham Heads.
