Short biography

Knowles is an art historian and curator. She moved to Cornwall in 1986 and became the Director of the Newlyn Art Gallery. She wrote and edited books on a range of artists, including Walter Langley, Terry Frost, Laura Knight, and Trevor Bell.

 

Full biography

Knowles worked in the Circulation Department at the V&A and then in the Modern Collection at the Tate. She left London for Cornwall in 1986 and worked as freelancer before being appointed Director of Newlyn Art Gallery. As Director, she presented a programme of contemporary art exhibitions, education, and events. The Exchange, a gallery in Penzance town, was opened during her tenure.

She was married to Stuart Knowles, the Cornish painter.
