Short biography

The famous nineteenth century novelist and author of The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda, among others. She visited Cornwall in 1857.

Full biography

The third child of Christiana & Robert Evans of Warwickshire, Eliot lived Coventry. She later travelled to Europe and settled in London. Her close friends included J.H. Mill and Barbara Bodichon.

Her partner was G.H. Lewes, with whom she visited Scilly Isles in April 1857. From her diaries, her rough iternary was as follows: 17 March 1857, stayed at the Union Hotel, Penzance; 18-26 March, 1857 stayed at No. 1, Marine Parade waiting out the rough seas for boat to the Scillies; remained in the Scillies until 11 May when, on returning to Penzance, stayed at Dingley's Private Hotel. Visited with Richard Quiller Couch (1816-63), physician and zoologist, son of naturalist Jonathan Couch. Left for Falmouth and the Steamer for Plymouth on the following morning.
