Short biography

An American poet and novelist, best known for her poetry Sea Garden (1916) and Helen in Egypt (1961). H.D. met her life partner Bryher, who took her name after one of the Scilly Isles, in Cornwall in 1918.

They spent time on St. Mary's following the birth of H.D.'s daughter, Perdita (whom Bryher would later adopt), in 1919. H.D. was married to Richard Aldington, a poet, from 1913 to 1938, but separated from him in the early 1920s. She was a friend and for a short time had been the fiancée of Ezra Pound and was friends with Dorothy Richardson, D.H. Lawrence, and other literary and artistic figures of the day. A large collection of her poetry can be found in the University of Exeter's Hypatia Collection.
