Short biography

Although she grew up in Canonbury, London, Hughes was a descendent of the Cornish Vivians. She authored a history of her Cornish family, particularly her mother and aunt's upbringing in Cornwall in Vivians: A Family in Victorian Cornwall (1935).

She also authored several memoirs on her experiences of growing up in London in the mid-to-late 1800s. Hughes was related to E. Lamorna Kerr, the Lamorna artist, and Charles Thomas, the founder of the Institute of Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter.
